FRANKLIAO

A director drawn to merge realism and genre, telling stories about something metaphorically big and truthfully small.

Frank Wenjie Liao holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Sun Yat-sen University and is currently studying a Master’s in Fiction Directing at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in the UK. Working across London, Canton and Shanghai, he brings a realism-grounded perspective to contemporary genre storytelling.

His work is driven by a tension between the intimate and the metaphorical: individuals caught inside systems, environments and choices larger than themselves. He works in Chinese and English, and develops fiction that combines precise visual worlds with emotionally touching performances.

His experience in directing departments on international feature-film productions, alongside years of production experience, enables him to navigate complex and varied narrative and commercial projects with confidence.
